Light the forest

Another evening with the steel-wool setup ended and in my opinion it did so with a bang.
After the first experiment in a pedestrian underpass turned out nice but not as special as I had hopped, we decided to step it up a bit.
I think the results are a lot better than the one from the first try but judge for yourselves.

And of course my very special thanks to Dino for producing two nearly perfect circles.
It might sound easy but trust me, swinging a glowing and sparkling bundle of steel-wool while circling around your own hand in a pitch black forest is a lot harder than it sounds.

Ring of Fire

So since I’m on my second week of vacation and pretty much bored out of my mind by now, I decided to take another shot an “light painting” tonight.
There’s this guy over at Twin Cities Brightest who does all sorts of crazy stuff with a variety of lights, LEDs, modifiers and DIY stuff. A couple of his images where done by igniting steel-wool and spinning it during a long exposure at night, thus capturing all the sparkles in beautiful patterns.

So earlier today I called up some friends and started preparing a spinning device consisting of a plastic handle, a steel cable and a whisk to hold the steel-wool.

The climax of 2 hours shopping and crafting and another 2 hours of freezing and experimenting at –4 degrees is this:

Looks nice for a first try but there will definitely be more and better images coming up in the next days. but first of all I need to get a UV-Filter for my lens… molten steel and glass don’t play nicely.

Anti-ACTA Protests in Munich

Today the Anti-ACTA protests swept over Europe. I was there and walking with the crowd in Munich.
Even though it was freezing at a mere -10°, officials approximated 16.000 protesters in Munich alone.
It was crowded, it was loud and I do believe it was a statement that we are not going to let ACTA pass. If need be, we will get out there again and again and again until no one every tries to mess with our freedom and our rights again.

So it’s on.. yet again. Just when SOPA/PIPA where stopped due to massive online protests, ACT got signed by 37 Nations.
Since I would like to keep the Internet exactly like it is today, it’s time to take my protest to the streets.

So I finally got a Beautydish for system flashes. Received it on Monday as a birthday present from good friends of mine.
Of course I had to try it out right then and there so I called another friend of mine and somehow convinced here to let me take a couple of shots.
It’s nothing special really but you just got to love the beautiful light this dishes produce.
